Taking advantage of the recession to maximise on your core company strengths

15th June 2009

The economic storm battering our economy is placing UK IT suppliers under increasing strain to prove their worth. Irrespective of the downturn our roles stay the same to provide fit-for-purpose EPOS solutions, deliver measurable results and superior service. With hard times ahead staying the same is not an option – now is the time to innovate.

According to IT analysts, while the global financial crisis is taking its toll on IT spending, IT systems that increase productivity and save time will still remain a priority despite the turmoil. This year it’s clear that enterprises with a forward-thinking approach and a solid grasp of technology trends will have a distinct competitive advantage.

I see this as being an ideal opportunity for companies like us. Understanding the needs of the customers has to be a key focus. As well as demonstrating a commitment to keep developing and expanding new EPOS solutions and product offerings. This will make a company an attractive proposition and valuable resource for customers and partners alike.

So what are the opportunities out there? If we take a look at what the main IT trends are for the retail sector for example, then PCI compliance will be at the top of the list. As companies will be looking to upgrade their EPOS systems to meet the new standards (including barcode scanners, cash drawers and barcode printers), it presents a good business opportunity for IT solutions providers. They can provide enhanced services such as helping their customers to comply with the PCI regulations. In addition, suppliers should also be looking to become more involved with their customers by offering advice and counsel them on emerging technologies and services – keeping them abreast of the times.

There will always be the big players in POS systems out there, but a growing number of smaller companies have emerged in recent years, and doing very well which proves that there are still opportunities for companies with energy, enthusiasm, innovation and a can-do attitude.

The positive effect the recession has had on companies is that it has changed the way people do business. It’s been the biggest and most far reaching shake -up ever. Managers have had to re-think strategies and respond to tougher competition and, dare I say it, truly listen to their customers needs. Even when the economic climate improves, businesses will not be able to go back to their old ways. Customers will continue to expect the new ‘lean’ approach from their suppliers. They will expect companies to be flexible and not change adverse. In my view companies that stay the course during these times will be set for a prosperous future.
